🚨 Rules, Refrigerants & Safety

HARDI: unfamiliar R-410A condensers in the channel may be illegal inventory — check DOE and certification before you buy (3 minute read)

HARDI (Oct. 8) warns unfamiliar makers are pitching HVAC gear — including new R-410A outdoor units — that may miss DOE efficiency certification. EPA still allows R-410A components for servicing existing systems if labeled "for servicing existing equipment only," but not for a new R-410A system. Red flags: missing from DOE's Compliance Certification Database, unverifiable AHRI/UL/ETL marks, model mismatches, or A1+A2L refrigerant claims. Tip-line reports go to DOE or EPA.

Mass Save sponsors sue an HVAC contractor over alleged ~$7.7M in heat-pump rebate claims (3 minute read)

Four of five Mass Save utility sponsors sued MWD Heating & Air Conditioning and owner Mark Dyszczyk in Plymouth Superior Court (~Sep. 21–24). The civil complaint alleges about $7.7M in heat-pump rebates for gear never installed, removed after inspection, or non-qualifying across 220 sites — including about $123,825 (Hingham school) and $67,500 (Rockland) with no install found. Sponsors say they suspended MWD in May and later alleged affiliate end-runs. Civil only; no criminal charges reported.

AHRI August: combined AC + heat-pump shipments +11.4%; gas furnaces still down (2 minute read)

AHRI’s August 2026 statistical release (Oct. 9): U.S. combined central air conditioner and air-source heat pump shipments hit 756,739 units, +11.4% vs. August 2025. Air conditioners alone 418,323 (+17.2%); heat pumps 338,416 (+5.0%). Year-to-date combined shipments 6,390,257 (+6.2%). Gas warm-air furnaces fell −4.3% in August to 287,710 and are −5.0% YTD. Homepros notes a seventh straight month of combined YoY growth after a long 2025 decline — against an easy August 2025 comparison.

October price list: linesets average +12.9%, with more 3–6% supplier moves through month-end (2 minute read)

ACHR's Oct. 7 digest: many October HVACR price letters cluster around 3–6%, but Aeris Metals linesets average +12.9% (eff. Oct. 5) and Robertshaw lists up to 15% on affected SKUs (most unchanged; some decrease; eff. Oct. 12). Also noted: Heat Controller WSHP/resi geo up to 5% (Oct. 1), tekmar ~6% (Oct. 16), Nailor 5% / Panasonic 3.7–4.0% (Oct. 19), and a Resideo zoning adjustment (Oct. 31). Refresh distributor sheets before locking fixed-price jobs.

AI demand planning is upstream — contractors feel it in lead times, not dashboards (3 minute read)

ACHR (Oct. 9): when manufacturers and distributors use AI for demand and replenishment, contractors can feel it as steadier lead times, less panic pricing, and fewer lost jobs waiting on equipment — even if the shop never runs the software. Contractor Tersh Blissett says most 10-truck shops still order on gut and last year; trust, cost, and messy data slow adoption. Truck/warehouse tools (e.g. Ply) catching excess stock and Carrier's AI planning push stay attributed.
