Pennsylvania's settlement makes a home-services shop confirm cracked heat exchangers and gas leaks before selling the fix (3 minute read)

Pennsylvania's attorney general settled with Gillece Services on Oct. 22 for $700,000 in restitution, plus $50,000 in costs and $250,000 in suspended penalties. The state alleged scare tactics, including gas-leak and cracked-heat-exchanger calls later discredited by third parties. Under the order, HVAC techs must be NATE-certified, gas leaks must be confirmed by the utility, and cracked heat exchangers must be confirmed by two NATE techs before the sale.

Mass Save heat-pump rebates drop for installs on or after Jan. 1, 2027 (2 minute read)

Mass Save's whole-home air-source rebate falls from $2,650 a ton (cap $8,500) to $2,350 (cap $7,500) for projects installed on or after Jan. 1. Partial-home goes from $1,125 to $1,000 a ton, capped at $7,500. The install date counts, not the contract date. Whole-home jobs need weatherization done first, and applications have needed a nameplate serial-number photo since Oct. 1. 2026 paperwork is due Feb. 28, 2027.

NTI and HTP gas boilers recalled after a cracked condensate dish blew a cover off and broke a tech's jaw (2 minute read)

CPSC and Ariston recalled 4,726 NTI FTVN and TFTN and HTP EFTU residential gas boilers on Oct. 29. A delayed ignition can crack the condensate dish, letting unburned gas build in the sealed cabinet; if it ignites, the front cover can blow off. Ariston reports 34 incidents, three with the cover detaching, and one servicing technician suffered a broken jaw. Units were sold through heating and plumbing contractors and wholesalers from May 2021 through July 2026. Owners should stop use and book a free repair by a certified tech; check serial ranges on the rating plate.

A lab study found people did worse on attention and memory tests in dirtier indoor air (2 minute read)

In a University College London chamber study published in iScience, 90 adults took cognitive tests twice: once with a HEPA purifier cleaning the air and once with a sham filter while candles raised fine particles (PM2.5). They did better on several attention and memory tasks in the cleaner air, and heart-rate variability dipped in the dirtier condition. Coordination and reasoning didn't change. It's useful context for filtration conversations, not a sales claim.

Consumers say they'll spend less on durable goods over the next six months (2 minute read)

The Conference Board's confidence index rose 7.5 points to 91.7 in October as gas prices eased. But consumers planned less spending on durable goods and services over the next six months, and plans to buy homes slipped. Twelve-month inflation expectations eased but stayed at 5.8%. Write-in answers kept pointing to rising costs. Paired with Michigan's weak October read on big-ticket buying, expect homeowners to push harder on repair versus replace.

Watsco posts a record $2.2B quarter as residential equipment sales rise 7% (3 minute read)

The largest U.S. HVAC distributor grew Q3 revenue 7% (4% same-store) and residential HVAC equipment 7%, on 5% more units and 2% higher prices. Commercial fell 5%. Watsco cites residential stabilizing after last year's A2L changeover and says momentum continued into Q4. Gross margin slipped to 26.4% from 27.5% as larger customers, replacement mix and smaller OEM price hikes weighed. Its OnCallAir contractor quoting app handled $2.0B in sales over 12 months.
