🚨 Rules, Refrigerants & Safety
ACCA and AHRI appeal NFPA rejection of TIA 1924 — outdoor HVAC GFCI exception still expired (3 minute read)
ACCA (Sep. 25) appealed NFPA’s rejection of TIA 1924, which would extend Exception No. 2 to NEC §210.8(F) through Sep. 1, 2028. Code-Making Panel 2 split 10–10 on technical merit; AHRI filed a separate procedural appeal. Exception No. 2 already expired Sep. 1, 2026, so outdoor HVAC GFCI is live where adopted. Standards Council next meets mid-December — verify AHJ amendments before quoting outdoor replacements.
Washington HFC rules still bind — state supersedes EPA R-410A install extension (3 minute read)
Washington Ecology says state HFC limits did not move with EPA’s Technology Transitions reconsideration. As of Jan. 1, 2026, newly installed resi/nonresi AC in Washington must use refrigerants with GWP <750 — no new R-410A whole-system installs — even where federal rules still allow certain pre-2025 inventory. Ecology’s Leonard Machut: no plan to align with EPA. Existing R-410A can keep running under the RMP (≥50 lb / GWP≥150): registration, leak inspections, 14-day repairs, five-year records.
🏠 Residential & Contractor Business
Under-30 buyers crack HVAC ownership — MSA-to-SBA and “checked-out” seller plays (3 minute read)
ACHR’s Sep. 23 package profiles two under-30 ownership paths. Elias Youssef (Warm Welcome, Westminster, Colo.) ran a distressed plumbing shop under a management services agreement for 16 months, then closed with $1.3M SBA 7(a) on operating financials — not a projection deck. Jack Carr (Rapid Response, Nashville) bought a dominant-but-disengaged shop at 30 and is stacking tuck-ins. Creative deal structure and post-close ops beat a trades pedigree on day one.

Samsung breaks ground on FläktGroup HVAC line in Gwangju — CDUs and CRAHs for AI data centers (3 minute read)
Samsung broke ground Sep. 21 on a FläktGroup HVAC line at its Gwangju third campus after committing about KRW 240 billion (~USD 158M per Samsung) for a ~21,500–21,800 m² plant aimed at early-2028 ops. The line — FläktGroup’s 15th global site — targets AI data-center and advanced-manufacturing cooling for Korea/East Asia, with CDUs, fan-wall units, CRAHs, and large-building AHUs. Hyperscale capacity signal, not a U.S. factory announcement.

Trane 20 TruComfort cold-climate HP: R-454B, WeatherGuard, DOE Challenge pedigree (3 minute read)
Trane’s 20 TruComfort Variable Speed Heat Pump with WeatherGuard is live as an R-454B, ENERGY STAR–qualified (coil-matched) platform in 2–5 ton 5TWV0X models. Sep. 25 trade coverage cites outdoor operation to −29 °C, DOE Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge roots, ORNL testing, and multi-state field hours — including a La Crosse, Wis., setpoint-hold claim without supplemental heat. COP/HSPF2/SEER2 not disclosed — sell on published ratings, not press % capacity retention alone.
Rheem expands FT Series hydronics — combi, 260k/399k boilers, STID Indirect Tank MAX (2 minute read)
Rheem (Sep. 23) expanded hydronics: ENERGY STAR FT Series Combi (space heat + DHW, pre-installed pump, up to 95% AFUE), FT high-capacity 260k/399k BTU/hr boilers (10:1 turndown, cascade to 24), and STID Indirect Tank MAX (80/119 gal). OEM engineering claims for STID 80 MAX: up to ~70% greater first-hour and nearly 90% more continuous DHW vs standard STID 80 — spec-sheet math, not field M&V. Now via Rheem wholesale; BoilerHub has sizing tools.

Atlantic Street Capital partners with GLP — specialty HVAC distributor for utilities, telecom, industrials (2 minute read)
Atlantic Street Capital (Sep. 24) partnered with GLP, a Toronto specialty HVAC distributor (est. 1958) focused on utilities, telecom, and industrials — equipment, parts, engineering, and design-to-warranty support. CEO Philip Desrochers and President Cameron Roblin frame organic growth plus add-ons; ASC’s Paul Sun cites value-added distribution experience. Terms undisclosed; KeyBanc advised. PE capital behind a niche engineering-heavy distributor — not a national resi roll-up.
