🚨 Rules, Refrigerants & Safety

Outdoor HVAC GFCI exemption expired Sept. 1 — ACCA maps what still applies by state (3 minute read)

NEC 210.8(F)’s Exception No. 2 for listed outdoor HVAC equipment expired September 1, 2026. ACCA’s GFCI Resource Center now tracks post-expiry reality: roughly 22 states have delayed or deleted the requirement on their own, so enforcement is jurisdiction-specific until NFPA rules on AHRI TIA 1924 (comment close Sept. 9; Standards Council decision still pending at draft time). High-frequency GFCIs are reaching the market but lack a full cooling-season field proof across equipment types. Contractors should check the ACCA state tools and confirm with the AHJ before quoting outdoor replacements.

DOE pauses enforcement of commercial gas water-heater 95%/96% TE standards for one year (3 minute read)

DOE’s Enforcement Policy Statement (EPS, clarified May 2026) leaves the October 6, 2026 commercial gas water-heater efficiency rule on the books but states the Department will not enforce it for products manufactured before October 6, 2027 — effectively a one-year enforcement pause. Storage units face ≥95% thermal efficiency (tankless/volume ≥96%), which would force condensing technology. The pause sits alongside Supreme Court remand of AGA v. DOE (June 8, 2026) and a separate petition track asking for delay to 2030. Specifiers and distributors should treat Oct. 6, 2026 as still the statutory date, with enforcement discretion that DOE can rescind.

ACCA, AHRI, HARDI, PHCC urge USTR: protect USMCA HVACR from Section 232 (2 minute read)

Four HVACR associations sent a joint letter (dated Sept. 1; HARDI release Sept. 2, 2026) to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer asking for broad Section 232 relief on USMCA-originating HVACR goods, workable rules of origin, and continued USMCA exemptions in future tariff actions. The letter cites 1.9 million U.S. HVACR workers benefiting from the pact and North American HVACR supply to the U.S. growing more than twice as fast as non-North American imports from 2018–2025. Channel pricing and lead times remain tariff-sensitive — watch USTR bilateral rounds with Mexico.

September HVAC price bump roundup: 5–15%, with more mid-month (2 minute read)

ACHR’s September 2, 2026 price-increase list flags early-month moves from Bard (service parts, Sept. 1), OmegaFlex TracPipe (+6%, Sept. 1), and Jones Stephens (5–15% by product group, Sept. 3), plus up-to-6% increases from M&M Manufacturing and Snappy effective September 21. Treat each OEM/supplier bulletin as the authority for SKUs and effective dates — the trade list is a discovery digest, not a bid book. Owners quoting Q4 changeouts should refresh distributor sheets before locking fixed-price jobs.

A2L changeouts are exposing R-410A-era install shortcuts (3 minute read)

ACHR’s Sept. 11 field analysis argues R-454B/R-32 systems (UL 60335-2-40 detection/mitigation, charge limits, A2L tooling) are less forgiving of the undersized-duct, gauge-and-top-off, and undocumented-match habits that R-410A often masked. Static-pressure checks before equipment selection, weighed charge with line-length correction, AHRI-matched combinations, and manufacturer A2L training are framed as warranty and comfort insurance — not optional polish. Attribute as trade opinion; pair with OEM install manuals for hard claims.

Johnson Controls launches Sabroe HitemHP industrial high-temp heat pumps (3 minute read)

JCI (Sept. 15, 2026) introduced the Sabroe HitemHP line for European industrial process heat above ~90°C — 10 standard models from 100–1,000 kW, natural refrigerants (isobutane to ~107–110°C / butane to 122°C per Cooling Post), Sabroe SMC reciprocating compressors with VSD part-load down to 18% capacity, and claimed up to ~20% higher COP at part load vs full load. One customer-application case study cites up to 3× electric-boiler efficiency and large CO₂/energy/water cost cuts when paired with refrigeration waste heat — illustrative, not a guarantee. Carrier Transicold at IAA 2026: [R]eCool battery, A2L R454A, Lynx Fleet LEZ (2 minute read)

Carrier Transicold (Sept. 4, 2026) previewed IAA Transportation Hannover (Sept. 15–20) cold-chain kit: a 38.5-kWh [R]eCool battery for electric/hybrid TRUs (new or retrofit, claimed up to 16-year lifecycle), Lynx Fleet Battery Health plus automatic Low-Emission Zone diesel-to-battery switching, Vector HE 17 on A2L R454A (OEM cites up to 89% lower GWP vs R452A), and a Vector HE 19 software fuel-optimization upgrade claiming up to 19% fuel cut with no hardware change. Transport refrigeration adjacency for applied/RACHP readers tracking A2L and electrification.

Beijer Ref to acquire 90% of Lithuania’s Refra — natural-refrigerant OEM (2 minute read)

Beijer Ref (Aug. 24, 2026) signed a binding agreement for 90% of Refra (Vilnius), a natural-refrigerant HVAC/R manufacturer (~SEK 500M turnover) specializing in CO₂ (R744) and propane (R290) chillers/heat pumps, with an option on the remainder. Refra keeps its brand; close awaits Lithuanian competition approval. Distinct from Issue 2’s FG Europe distributor deal — this is an OEM/natural-refrigerant manufacturing bolt-on for Beijer Ref’s global network.
